Mile High Card Company Tops $300,000 for 1959 Topps Set in MHCC June Auction
Castle Rock, CO – Offering one of the most comprehensive selections of sports cards and memorabilia in its history, Mile High Card Company’s June Auction closed to a whole slew of eye-opening prices realized, led by a 1959 Topps Baseball Complete Set #3 on PSA Set Registry with Set Rating 9.48 that brought in a whopping $301,907. “There were so many items that exceeded expectations that we haven’t had a chance to fully break it down yet, but it was definitely a good day for both bidders and consignors,” said MHCC owner and President Brian Drent.
As expected, bidding remained strong well into the night. Three amazing items that were hotly contested were the 1939 Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Class Cooperstown Signed First Day Cover Featuring Wagner, Ruth, Cobb, Young, Speaker, Johnson Etc. PSA/DNA 9 MINT that landed at $141,412, the 1939 Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Signed OAL (Harridge) Ball Featuring (16) HOFers Including Ruth, Alexander, Wagner, Young, Johnson, Etc. that sold for $28,683 and a circa 1910 Spectacular Peach (J.A. Peach Company) Baseball Gloves Advertising Display that sold for $55,409.
Another featured section of the auction was the Jim Bottomley Collection, a total of 85 lots from the personal estate of Hall of Famer “Sunny Jim” that brought in a combined sum of over $76,000, led by a Professional Model H&B Game-Used 1926 World Series Bat PSA/DNA GU 10 at $23,595, 1931 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Championship Ring at $21,400, Professional Model Game-Used Glove PSA/DNA at $5,247, 1926 St. Louis Cardinals National League Champions 14K Gold Pocket Watch Presented to Jim Bottomley at $7,851 and a 1932 Dizzy Dean Rookie Year St. Louis Cardinals Game-Used Warm Up Jacket Gifted to Jim Bottomley at just over $13,000.
Leading the selection of world class cards was a 1933 Goudey #149 Babe Ruth PSA 8 NM/MT that sold for $114,375 and included a 1888-89 Old Judge N173 Cap Anson Cabinet SGC 60 EX 5 that sold for $13,133, 1911 Sporting Life Cabinets M110 Christy Mathewson SGC 60 EX 5 that got heavy bidding and closed at $18,329, 1948 Leaf #4 Stan Musial PSA 8 NM/MT hammering at $20,715, 1952 Bowman #101 Mickey Mantle PSA 8 NM/MT selling for $10,247, 1957 Topps #400 Dodgers Sluggers PSA 9 MINT, another heavily contested card, that sold for $8,380, 1969 Topps #500 Mickey Mantle Last Name in White PSA 8 NM/MT that closed at $23,363 and a 1981 Topps #216 Joe Montana PSA 10 GEM MINT that sold for $10,582.
A 1951 Topps Ringside Boxing Complete Set #3 Current Finest on PSA Set Registry with 8.21 Set Rating was broken up and sold for a combined total of $20,065, with other top-ranked collections that included a 1952 Topps Near Complete Set (406/407) with Many PSA Graded at $34,012 and a 1966 Topps Football High Grade Complete Set #2 on PSA Set Registry with 8.898 Set Rating at $14,487. One of the biggest battles of the night was over a 2000 Upper Deck SP Football Unopened Case that went back and forth before settling at $27,317.
 
MHCC offered a large selection of vintage unopened packs that brought in unexpectedly high prices, led by a 1959 Topps Baseball Wax Pack NM/MT 8 that sold for $8,636, followed by a 1963 Topps Baseball Cello Pack NM+ 7.5 that went for $2,971, 1965 Topps Baseball Unopened Cello Pack NM+ 7.5 that hammered at $2,677, 1971 Topps Baseball Wax Pack MINT 9 that sold for $2,472, 1960 Topps Baseball Wax Pack 5 Cent NM/MT+ 8.5 that settled at $1,659, 1968 Topps Baseball Wax Pack NM/MT 8 that sold for $1,029 and a 1961 Fleer Basketball Wax Pack 5 Cent NM/MT 8 that finished up at $2,572.
