Mile High Card Company Closes Out Year with Strong Elite December Auction Results
Mile High Card Company capped off another record-setting year with their Elite December Auction, an event that featured just over 500 lots but included some of the most coveted pieces in the hobby. Four of baseball’s most iconic cards went to the auction block, with a T206 Eddie Plank PSA 1 PR netting $41,345, 1909 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson PSA 2(MK) GOOD that brought in $17,040, 1933 Goudey #106 Nap Lajoie SGC 6.5 EX/NM+ that sold for $34,012 and a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 VG/EX that fetched $27,088. “Even as strong as our hobby is right now, I’m still amazed at the groundbreaking prices we’ve realized over the past few auctions” said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent.
 
Other key cards in the auction included a 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Cap Anson PSA 6 EX/MT that sold for $11,641, 1911 M110 Sporting Life Ty Cobb SGC 10 POOR 1 that ended at $6,351, extremely rare 1911-1916 T216 People's Tobacco Ty Cobb Detroit Americans PSA 1 PR that brought down $8,797, 1915 Cracker Jack #88 Christy Mathewson SGC 88 NM/MT 8 that received strong bidding before settling at $11,641, 1915 E106 American Caramel Honus Wagner Batting PSA 5 EX changing hands for $10,492, the always coveted 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle rookie card SGC 60 EX 5 that went for $9,314 and a particularly stellar 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle Gray Back PSA 9 MINT that went for $42,549. MHCC auctions are always leading the way in posting record-shattering prices, with notable results including sales of a 1933 Goudey #230 Carl Hubbell PSA 8 NM/MT for $3,079,1955 Topps #64 Gus Triandos PSA 9 MINT for $4,352, 1955 Topps #92 Don Zimmer PSA 9 MINT for $6,202,1955 Topps #154 Willie Miranda PSA 9 MINT for $1,131,1958 Topps #1 Ted Williams PSA 8 NM/MT for $2,748,1960 Topps #498 Al Pilarcik PSA 9 MINT for $1,875,1963 Fleer #46 Joe Adcock PSA 10 GEM MINT for $2,064,1963 Fleer #59 Bill Mazeroski PSA 10 GEM MINT for $3,596,1966 Topps #80 Richie Allen PSA 10 GEM MINT for $1,674 and 1970 Transogram Roberto Clemente PSA 9 MINT that brought in a whopping $4,145. Unopened material was equally successful with a 1962 Topps Baseball First Series Wax Pack 5 Cent GAI 7 NM selling for $1,703, a 1965 Topps Football 5 Cent Wax Pack GAI 7 NM going for $4,429 and a 1969 Topps Football Unopened Rack Pack (BBCE) bringing in $3,660.
 
Complete and near complete sets were also high in demand with the two most highly-desired baseball compilations ever produced out in front: a 1909-11 T206 Near Complete Set (475/520) With Many PSA Graded was pursued aggressively and sold for $42,130 while a 1952 Topps Near Complete Set (377/407) With Many PSA Graded brought in $24,627. Also receiving very spirited bidding was a 1969 Topps Football Set #10 on PSA Set Registry with 8.47 Set Rating that went for $10,247 and a 1970 Topps Super Glossy Football Set #1 on PSA Set Registry with 10.972 Set Rating that surprised at $7,851. There’s no better place to sell a baseball card collection than a Mile High Card Company auction, and these incredible results adding further evidence that MHCC is the place to consign; a 1951 Topps Red and Blue Back Extremely High Grade Complete Sets sold for $4,560, 1954 Topps Baseball Near Complete Set (248/250) with PSA Graded Stars went for $6,995, 1955 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars changed hands for $6,359, 1956 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars landed at $6,569,1957 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars closed at $5,721,1959 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars closed the bidding at $6,351,1961 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars surprised at $4,145,1963 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars was sold for $6,358,1964 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars that closed at $6,770,1965 Topps Baseball Complete Set w/PSA Graded Stars that sold for $5,085,1966 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars closed at $4,145 ,1967 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded landed at $6,987 and 1970 Topps Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded Stars coming in at a very impressive $6,868.
 
Sports autographs and memorabilia were hotly contested throughout the course of the auction with a Spectacular Babe Ruth Single-Signed Baseball Graded NM/MT 8 fetching $30,117, an Outstanding 1915 Joe Jackson Type I Photograph that was heavily contested and sold for $9,898, 1922 Christy Mathewson Signed Check PSA/DNA 9 with Letter From Mrs. Mathewson to Collector selling for $21,400, a world-class Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Barnstorming Photograph PSA/DNA MINT 9 that went to the high bidder for $18,049, extremely rare 1953-54 Caguas-Guayama Puerto Rico Winter League Team-Signed Baseball with (18) Signatures Featuring Henry Aaron that sold for $4,026, Exceptional 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Champions Team-Signed Baseball with (25) Signatures Including Koufax, Robinson, Campanella and Hodges posting a winning bid of $3,583, 1969-72 Willie Mays Game-Used Louisville Slugger Bat PSA/DNA GU 8.5 that sold for $8,192 and a 1982-83 Ryne Sandberg Game-Used and Signed Rookie Era Louisville Slugger Bat PSA/DNA GU 10 which found a new home for $6,487.
 
MHCC also presented a tremendous music memorabilia and autograph component with over 30 signed pieces of artwork by Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia and headlined by two autographed Beatles pieces newly introduced to collectors; a Spectacular 1963 The Beatles Signed Photograph with All Four Members that sold for $11,557 and a 1963 The Beatles Signed Hotel Register with All Four Members (with Ringo Starr signature as R. Starkey) that brought in $13,350.
