Starting as the house band for Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests, to their notorious role as security consultants for the Altamont Festival, the Dead were always at the center of the psychedelic sixties.
Steeped in the American musical tradition, these innovators blended elements of Folk, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, and Rock ‘n’ Roll into an entirely new genre of music. They thrilled their minions and were a force that carried the art and ideals of the sixties to future generations of concert goers.

Today’s “Jam Band” scene would not exist without the groundbreaking territory forged by Jerry Garcia and Company. Next generation bands like Phish, String Cheese Incident and Widespread Panic quickly capitalized on the formula of community, non stop touring and free form performances that were invented by The Dead.
The Dead were mainstays of the Fillmore, and Avalon series and are represented on advertisements from just about every venue that had a significant poster run.
