2011 marks the 45th Anniversary of the birth of the San Francisco psychedelic concert poster. This spectacular sale celebrates the Inaugural Year of the San Francisco Scene.
The season was right and the ground fertile for great innovation in music and art. The residents of Haight Ashbury were coming into their own as a community of innovative thinkers, committed bohemians and psychedelic pioneers. Make no mistake about it, the Haight in 1966 was still pure and idealistic with unlimited possibilities. This was the authentic movement, before the scene was discovered by the media and inundated by runaways and mindless bandwagon jumpers.
The seminal event that kicked off 1966 was the Trips festival, which employed Bill Graham as its “manager” of sorts. Less than a month later, Graham and the Family Dog would begin to promote shows at the historic Fillmore Auditorium. Like a thermo-nuclear blastoff, the music rocked and the posters rolled. The world is still trying to deal with changes that were wrought.
